In recent weeks the big institutions or the so-called "smart money" have been placing major bets against one key market: the major stock markets. However, there is something extraordinary about the recent betting behaviour of these big market players. It seems that they are buying significant amounts of puts versus calls - more than any time in history. Essentially this means that these market players are very concerned and worried about a potential crash in the stock markets. But what does history and statistics say about the actions of these traders? Are they usually right or are they not so "smart" at all? Should we perhaps treat their actions as a "contrary" indicator?
